The reason I ask is:

After I graduate from university (In 3 years) I am seriously considering one year at the LA music academy. A close friend of mine did this and has only good memories.

The reason I am considering this is because I really want to see if I have what it takes to dedicate myself to something (in this case drumming) for a long period of time. From what I understand you play about 8-12 hours every day. This would probably mean some times of absolute hell, but I want to rise to the challenge! I am sure my playing would benefit a lot from this. I already looked at their promotional video and found it very inspiring.

I was wondering if anyone here has graduated from the Academy or perhaps knows people that did or have any input on the issue. Id be thrilled to hear your experiences.

    Hey Guys,

I think that Ralph Humphrey and Joe Porcaro are the Boss there...

    But I'm not sure.

    Cheers.

la tim went there, and he must've played about 8 hrs a day. i could be wrong but i'm sure he'll quickly agree that playing with different ensembles and styles was a huge part of their curriculum. it seems they get alot of great clinics there too. his playing vastly improved in that year. much credit also goes to tim, because he put his blood, sweat and tears into it. it really showed.

i'm thinking their facility is pretty darned good, too. we'll let's hope he chimes in. the school is in 'old town pasadena'. pretty much near the rose parade route. that town is great. beautiful and historic within 15 - 20 minutes of l.a., hollywood, burbank, well ya gets the picture. (whoa i'm starting to sound like a recruiter.) hope this helps.

I was going to go there about 2 years ago, but I ended up not going for financial reasons. I did, however, get a chance to check the school out while I was visiting Pasadena.

First off it seems like a great place to be, very friendly. If you want I'm sure you can practice 8-12 hours a day, though I'm not sure the classes consist of this. What I really liked about them is they have a great teaching staff, small class sizes, and do a lot of ensembles with pro musicians.

Having said that, I'm not really interested in attending anymore. It's one path, but not the only path. If you go I'm sure it will be a great experience. Good luck!

    Sounds great Chuch!

I also heard about the great faculty. The lessons also include sight-reading (A skill i really need to develop). Playing in groups is also something you do close to every day. That would be with members of the vocal, guitar, bass faculties.

Then I also hear that they hire professional musicians and you can sit in with them. I am dreading the day where I need to drive a Big Band...Thats gonna be rough!

Yreah at MI they would bring in horn players on either wed or thursdays and you would have a chance to shed a tune before hand and then sit in with the band and play thru the chart and then get critiqed by the players.

You can't go wrong w the combo of Joe & Ralph.

Joe has the SA jazz, big-band, & more thing sewed up, & 1 of RH's many attributes is that he's an absolutely killer fusion style & odd-meter groove player, IMO.
